Living the legend that simply is...
Driza–Bone®
This is the story of a coat...

The canny invention of a Scottish sailor over 100 years ago who fashioned waterproof coats out of windjammer sails. Over the years, many myths and legends have sprung up around this remarkable garment until today the Driza–Bone® coat has become an Australian institution. It is a name synonymous with wet weather and performance wear throught the vast continent.
Here we give you get an insight into the legend, the company and the products that have made Driza–Bone® famous.
Driza–Bone® and Merino wool – a perfect match
To say we're excited about the launch of the new Driza–Bone® Activ™ range would be an understatement. The latest in hi–tech performance–gear, it closely follows the Horizon Adventure–wear range, and has already been embraced by sporting legends - including mountaineer Piers Buck in his ascent of Mt. Everest, and the team aboard successful Sydney to Hobart challenge, Wild Oats XI.

Sticking to the principles that have made us famous; Comfort, protection and unsurpassed quality, this fine–gauge Merino product compliments the existing range of Driza–Bone® products perfectly, providing an incredibly effective performance undergarment for harsh conditions, and unsurpassed comfort for when you just want to relax.
Benefits of Merino wool
Breathability – Merino wool releases heat during activity and traps and retains warmth when cooler, keeping you warm when you're cold and cool when you're hot. UV Protection – Because the merino fibre has literally evolved on the sheep's backs over the last million years, the fleece has been found to have a number of attributes that help sustain life in hazardous environments. Merino offers high UV protection, with a natural sun protection of UPF50+ and also has a natural fire resistance. Anti–Static – Merino, unlike its synthetic counterparts, holds anti–static properties that prevent clinging. Comfort Next to Skin – Nature's best 100% Australian fine Merino wool is the world's finest fibre. Merino's adaptable qualities mean that it's perfect for high–performance activities and equally suited to simply relaxing. Merino wool is much finer than other types of wool and feels as soft as silk against the skin. Natural Stretch – The natural stretch and flexibility of the merinofibre adds another dimension to the comfort and performance of the garments, merino wool is also exceptionally durable and comfortable. Moisture Absorption – The merino fibre has the capability to absorb moisture vapour without feeling wet, which totally outperforms any alternative. Odour Dispelling – Natural resistance to stains and odours makes merino garments ideal for active wear. This also means that merino garments can be washed less frequently than cotton or synthetics. Natural – In our environmentally conscious times, it's important to note that Merino wool is also sustainable and biodegradable.
'Driza–Bone® Aboard
Global Pace–setter Wild Oats XI'...
Driza–Bone® has taken to the water to test its new range of merino gear, not taking it lightly they have gone out to sea with the best in the business!
The crew of 2006 Sydney to Hobart winner Wild Oats XI were very willing participants in testing this great new gear in the variety of extreme weather conditions that only ocean going racing can provide. The Hamilton Island racing series, this year's Sydney to Hobart and a very recent win in the highly competitive Zegna Trophy in Italy have provided the perfect conditions for proving the gear functions in all conditions.
Testing aboard Wild Oats XI came about due to a pretty extraordinary sports man who just so happens to also grow a very fine bale of wool. Mast man Rick Goodrich, Kings Cup winning rower and two times sailor in the America's Cup, led the charge to get the Driza–Bone® gear aboard with businessman and owner of Wild Oats, Bob Oatley. Rick has persuasive powers afforded only to a man who's built like your average Mack truck but it was more the performance of the gear that kept it onboard with this crew who could pick and choose amongst the world's best sailing gear.
Discussing this year's winning trip from Sydney to Hobart, Rick says, "the clothing could not have performed better. It helped keep the crew warm and comfortable throughout the 43–hour race".
This race ended with Wild Oats sailing into the history books by winning line honours and the handicap victory, plus setting a new course record.
The team making the new range of Driza–Bone® merino gear have had significant experience in making high quality and very comfortable next to skin merino clothing. The key to really comfortable gear is to have access to the right raw materials and the expertise to make sure it is made right.
Rick's property in Southern Queensland, Terrica Station is a part of the answer. His flock's average micron range is 17.5, making it ideal for comfortable high–performance outdoor wear.
Much finer than normal wool, merino is soft as silk to touch and its super fine fibres are ideal for next–to–skin wear. But its advantages extend beyond its sensuous feel:
Any garment worn next to the skin must be able to "breathe", which means it must be able to absorb perspiration and release it and no fabric does that quite like merino.
The hydrophilic core of the merino fibre has an amazing capacity to absorb liquid – up to 35% of its own weight. So, it's able to absorb sweat from the skin, move it away from the body, and release it as vapour.
Petrochemical–based synthetics like polypropylene and acrylic have poor breathability because their less complex structures don't have the same capacity to absorb moisture as merino. What's more, merino, unlike synthetics, is an active fibre, reacting to changes in your body's temperature to keep you warm when you're cold or cool when you're hot – making it perfect for the variable conditions regularly encountered in ocean racing.
Easy Care – All Driza–Bone® Clothing is designed to be easy care without compromising any performance. All are Machine Washable. Robust – The fabrics can be bent, flexed and stretched in any direction over 30,000 times without adverse effects. It will perform and keep looking good after many seasons. It will also resist pilling. UV Protection – with a natural sun protection of UPF50+ Driza–Bone® clothing will keep you well protected from the dangers of too much sun. Static Resistance – The fabrics are naturally resistant to static so they don't cling and avoid shocks. No Odour – Permanent and natural non–odour ensure the clothing remains stink free throughout extended competition even without washing. Warm when Wet – If the fabric does get wet it will still keep you warm. Sustainable – Driza–Bone® fabrics are sourced from 100% ecologically sustainable sources.
Revered veteran Australian yachtsman Iain Murray has this to say about his experiences with Driza–Bone® merino sailing gear: "the latest Driza–Bone® Merino is the 'new age' in technical wear. Its comfort and performance in all conditions has impressed a lot of serious yachties."
Driza–Bone®'s really excited about the launch of its new range of merino gear. Most of the rigorous testing has been out on the water, but consider Piers Buck for a moment, who managed to ascend and descend Mount Everest wearing his merino shirt for over sixty days straight and it did not smell at all, or so the story goes! Driza–Bone® merino gear is very suitable for all types of performance activity and just as comfortable when you are relaxing.

Born on the sea, conceived on the land...

In 1898, a scottish sailor by the name of Edward Le Roy fashioned a few old canvas windjammer sails to protect himself from the daily abuse handed out by the 'Roaring Forties'. He did not know it, but he had created what all Australians now know as the first ever Driza–Bone® Oilskin Coat. Over a hundred years on, Driza–Bone® is now a household name.
Located in sunny Queensland, half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Driza–Bone® operates from what was once a local country pub. One of the largest employers for the local community, our manufacturing capabilities are unrivalled and with over 100 years of practice, its no wonder.

It might also explain why Driza–Bone® are one of the few remaining Australian clothing manufacturers; understanding the punishment our harsh Australian climate can deliver, the evolution of our range has flourished with styles that cater for a vast array of people and conditions.
Many other stories can be told about the legend, so check out use the links to the left to see what it is that makes the name Driza–Bone® synonymous with Australia, and loved by Australians the world over.

Coming soon...
A beautifully illustrated tale, penned by Catherine Retter, retelling many of the legends, lore and lies which surround this national icon, from its beginnings on storm-tossed sailing ships last century to its adoption as part of Australia's national attire.
A number of celebrities have recently come onboard with Driza–Bone® to promote our range, and who could blame them?
Free Driza–Bone®'s are probably a hard offer to refuse!
Brett Lee, the emerging star of Australia's fast bowling fraternity, is one of a select group who recently joined the Driza–Bone® team.
Another Australian sporting great now wearing our products around the world is Stephen Larkham, the gifted and encumbent fly–half in Australia's crack Rugby Union outfit – The Wallabies.
Both men epitomise the values Driza–Bone® hold important in an ambassador, and we can't lie – they just look great wrapped in their Driza's!.
Got a Question? Our products are lifelong treasures – special enough to treat them properly, so we've decided to use our knowledge here by listing the most frequently requested advice in one easy-to-find section of our site.
Whether its a tip, trick, policy or even just gossip, you'll find it here in our Frequently Asked Questions.
Use the links to the left to narrow your search and find the results you need!
1. How do I clean my Driza?
Obviously your Driza will get dirty, especially if you use it in the manner it was always intended! Depending on the level of punishment you've dished out, you may get away with simply letting it dry, brushing the dirt away from the fabric and wiping it down with a damp cloth. If you find this is not sufficient however, follow the steps below for a more thourough clean:For any products containing Rabbit Fur, Suede or Leather content, please see 'Special Fabrics' below
Step1: Brush off any excess dirt with a soft brush. Step2: Hand wash your Driza Bone coat in luke–warm water in Lux Flakes or Sunlight soap (any washing agent that does not contain detergent). Step3: If your coat has developed a musty smell add Tea Tree or Eucalyptus Oil when cleaning your garment. Step4: Take your coat and place on strong coat hanger, and then rinse suds off with a hose. Step5: Place your coat in a shady well ventilated area and leave to dry. Before storing, always ensure your coat is free from any moisture otherwise mildew will develop. Once clean, and depending on how old your product is, you may find your oilskin product requires re–oiling after cleaning. You can do this either by purchasing our own branded 'Garment Dressing' and applying it yourself, or for a small fee we will do it for you. Either way your garment will come out looking like new again!
2. How do I clean products containing 'Special fabrics'?
'Special fabrics' include PVC, Rabbit Fur, Suede, Leather, Microfibre (technical fabrics), Nylon, Polyester and Wool. Use the following instructions for these items::Always remember to dry slowly, and not in direct sunlight (or in the rear window of the car!). Doing so may cause shrinkage of your product.
PVC: Wash with soap and water. Rabbit Fur: Dry Clean Only. Sude: Use saddle–soap, a hard brush & cold water. Leather: Use saddle–soap & sponge. Microfibres: Please read the care instructions on your Driza–Bone® garment. Nylon/Polyester: Please read the care instructions on your Driza–Bone® garment. Wool: Please read the care instructions on your Driza–Bone® garment.
3. My garment seems dry and is fading. How do I fix this?
Although Driza–Bone® products come with a rock–solid guarantee, all fabrics succumb to wear–and–tear. If you have a genuine Oilskin Driza–Bone® however, you're in luck! Our products are quite unique, in that they can be given a fresh lease on life simply by re–oiling. Use the following steps to re–oil your Oilskin product:Step1: Heat your Driza Bone Re–proofing Oil. This is done by boiling a pot of water, removing the lid from the tin and then setting the tin in the water. Step2: Take your can out of the water – working quickly paint the oil on the coat with a soft paint brush or sponge. You must ensure the oil is hot and melted at all times. Step3: Allow the garment to dry thouroughly before storing or wearing. After wearing your coat in the rain etc. ensure you allow the appropriate amount of drying time and ensure no moisture remains as putting away a damp coat will eventuate in a moldy coat. You may also like to spray your coat lightly with Teflon or scotch guarding spray. This will not only help repel water, but will also maintain the fabric.
4. My garment is a little old now, and has begun leaking. How do I fix it?
It largely depends on the location of the leak, and the age of the garment. In most cases, re–oiling your garment will fix the problem, however if this does not work, your best bet is to contact us directly and ask for advice.
To re–oil your garment, purchase a tin of genuine Driza–Bone® Garment Dressing, and follow the steps outlned in Q3. above.
5. I'm interested in the fabrics used by Driza–Bone®. What's so special about them?
HEAVYWEIGHT OILKSIN: This 12oz. fabric made from 100% cotton is impregnated with a wax compound (consisting mostly of paraffin wax). This fabric is extremely warm, wind breaking and highly water repellent rain. Coat can be re–oiled with Driza Bone Garment Dressing when necessary to maximise use from garment and maintain water repellence. LIGHTWEIGHT OILSKIN: This 6oz. fabric made from 100% cotton is impregnated with a wax compound but is a lighter alternative to the heavyweight oilskin. This fabric is still quite water repellent and is good for those looking for an oilskin but something not so heavy. SUMMERWEIGHT FABRIC: This 4oz. fabric consists of 65% cotton and 35% polyester and is dry–oiled. Jackets made with this material are only recommended to be worn in light showers for short periods of time and is not quite as warm as an oilskin – this is a great lighter option. DRIZAPEL/DURAPEL FABRIC: This 6oz. fabric is made from 100% cotton and is treated with a Teflon coating. The feel and colour range of this fabric is what makes it appealing. Whilst being lightweight and showerproof it also looks good. The garment may be lightly sprayed with a Teflon or scotch–guarding spray to maintain the water repelling qualities of the fabric. PEACHSKIN & MICROSUEDE: This fabric is made from polyester and is treated with a Teflon coating to maintain the condition of the fabric. It has a soft feel and is not recommended for wearing in rain. MOLESKIN: Moleskin is a tightly woven 100% cotton cloth with a Teflon coating to maintain the fabric; it is brushed to create a soft velvety feel. It is soft and comfortable to wear yet very durable and hardwearing. EPIC: This fabric is waterproof, windproof & breathable. This fabric is not laminated or treated with chemical coatings that will eventually wash away. Instead the individual fibres are encapsulated with silicone–based polymers, leaving a highly water repellent material that has a great look and a soft feel. THERMOLITE: This thermal insulation provides a high level of warmth at minimal weight. It keeps you warm, dry & comfortable without being bulky.
6. I'd like to take my Driza–Bone® coat with me on a trip – what's the best way to store it?
Roll your own Driza of course!
![]()
To start, snap close all the press studs located on the front of the coat. Then lay the coat with the front facing up on a dry, clean, flat surface and press out the wrinkles.
![]()
Now fold the sleeves into the centre of the coat at about 30° inside vertical. Start from the shoulder seam and make the sleeves overlap in the centre.
![]()
Next fold the two outside quarters of the coat into the centre, forming a long thin rectangle. Ensure the outside edges are touching, and not overlapping.
![]()
Now roll the coat up tightly. Start from the bottom of the coat, and proceed to work your way towards the top of the coat until you reach the cape.
![]()
Finally, fold the cape around the roll, so the inside of the cape covers the roll completely.
Ensure your coat is completely free from moisture before storing. Not doing so will eventuate in a moldy coat.
