In 1898 a British Sailor Emilius Le Roy envisioned an all-weather, indestructible jacket made of old recycled ship sails that were treated with oil. His first iteration that was dubbed the first ‘Driza-Bone’ unfortunately was pretty flammable due to the use of linseed oil.

Later, T.E Pearson who was the son of E.J Pearson and the founder of Pearson Soap brought a consignment of LeRoy coats to Australia to rework the proofing process. It is this excellent formula that we still use to proof our coats today.

Since 1898, Driza-Bone has become an Australian Icon being worn not only by stockmen but by politicians such as John Howard and George W Bush; Rockstars and models like Kate Moss and by the everyday Australian.

Whether it’s wearing one to drove a mob of sheep across the central plains or throwing one on to keep dry at the footy, there’s nothing more quintessentially Australian than wearing a Driza-Bone.

Our traditional Oilskin coats and jackets are made from sturdy 100% cotton that is coated with our uniquely formulated oil and wax finish to give the Oilskin its distinctive weatherproof and breathable character. As a specialised garment, the Driza-Bone Oilskin fabric needs special attention to maintain its weatherproofing qualities.

You can learn how to look after your Driza-Bone on our Garment Care page.

  2. Only regret is not purchasing the hood
    100%
The first time I got to try my Driza-Bone riding coat was on a day that the skies opened with hail, thunder, lightning and a pouring rain so dense it was as if the air was painted by gray-white icy cold rainstrokes. I've hardly ever seen anything like it. The horse and I were caught by the thunderstorm which lasted a good hour. When we finally got back to the farm, I was dry - at least my upper body was. My knees and thighs were soaked, but I cannot tell whether it was due to the coat or to the fact that I chose to jump off of her as the lightning stroke a bit too close. I had rolled up my sleaves, and I learnt that they need to be rolled inwards, not outwards. In the storm, the lining got wet, and the water crept upwards in the lining. My fault, not the coat's! As for size, I was very uncertain. I am quite big, but I only measure 1,60 m. I used the measuring chart to find my size, and I ended up with an XL. I think I could have done with an L, but XL is not a problem. I need to roll up my sleeves, and I can fit a wollen sweater underneath. Living in Norway, that's a must. I feared it was too long when I first tried it on, but with boots or jodpurs, the length is good. My feet are completely covered in the coat-tails when mounted. The coat creates a dry "tent" which ic very comfortable. My only regret is that I didn't purchase the hood as well. Even though I use a riding hat, water ran down my neck. Then again, the conditions were pretty extreme. In "normal" rain, the riding hat is enough.

  4. Just too easy
    100%
I ordered the wrong size garment and it was so easy to get it sent back and the right size sent back out it was just too easy. I bought the riding coat with a wool liner amd it is so mich better than i knew it would be, i just recently completed a camping trip out west in the middle of winter and i wore it every night and not once did i feel the cold in the slightest.
