In 1898 a British Sailor Emilius Le Roy envisioned an all-weather, indestructible jacket made of old recycled ship sails that were treated with oil. His first iteration that was dubbed the first ‘Driza-Bone’ unfortunately was pretty flammable due to the use of linseed oil.

Later, T.E Pearson who was the son of E.J Pearson and the founder of Pearson Soap brought a consignment of LeRoy coats to Australia to rework the proofing process. It is this excellent formula that we still use to proof our coats today.

Since 1898, Driza-Bone has become an Australian Icon being worn not only by stockmen but by politicians such as John Howard and George W Bush; Rockstars and models like Kate Moss and by the everyday Australian.

Whether it’s wearing one to drove a mob of sheep across the central plains or throwing one on to keep dry at the footy, there’s nothing more quintessentially Australian than wearing a Driza-Bone.

Our traditional Oilskin coats and jackets are made from sturdy 100% cotton that is coated with our uniquely formulated oil and wax finish to give the Oilskin its distinctive weatherproof and breathable character. As a specialised garment, the Driza-Bone Oilskin fabric needs special attention to maintain its weatherproofing qualities.

You can learn how to look after your Driza-Bone on our Garment Care page.

  2. Fast and efficient service to the UK
    100%
Whilst there are two small modifications I would like to see made, I want to make it clear that I unreservedly recommend this coat, which is every bit as good as the description implies. I feel two small modifications would improve the coat even more: 1. The rear vent should start a few inches higher up the back to further enhance freedom of movement when required. 2. The storm flap at the front should be capable of being fixed back out of the way when not required. Even without these modifications I am delighted, both with the coat and the fast and efficient service to the UK I received.

  3. Great coat

Great coat, a little on the heavy side but you get used to that - only thing I would change would be the cuff to more Velcro to enable it to be made tighter due to length of sleeves

  4. A great waterproof coat, perfect for fisherman
    100%
Hi all,I'm a fisherman and I spend most of my time on boats in the ocean, and quite frankly I couldn't of asked for a better jacket to keep me warm and dry on those freezing cold mornings in heavy seas with terrible winds. Most jackets can't take that much water and stay dry,but my riding coat is great. To be honest the only reason I bought a new one is because I lost my old one that I got back in 1990 overboard 3months ago,so with winter coming again,it was time for a replacement, and a new old faithful was bought.if your looking for a great waterproof coat you can't go wrong with these, mine lasted 28 years before I lost it and my father has had his since the '60's.made to last, great job everyone at driza-bone this ones just as good as the old one, greatly appreciated, Mr B Stewart

  5. Like the lighter material, it's an excellent product

Excellent product. This new version is a bit lighter than the older version I had what will make me use it a bit longer at spring. The older version had a thicker liner that made it very hot on nice and warm days.

  6. Prompt shipping and quick returns
    100%
Great order confirmation feedback, & prompt shipping. I ordered a Large, based on sizing info, but was too big. Upon ringing customer support, I organised a return. Driza Bone very quickly sent me a Medium. Perfect size ( I'm 173cm tall). Beaut coat. Exactly what I required & expected. Quality is spot on.

Am replacing my Driza Bone finally after 17 years, but only because it is now getting to small for me. Well worth the money!

  8. Good quality and made for Aussie conditions
    100%
I bought a full length driza-bone coat for my brother to use on our farm. I already have a three quarter length coat which I love and wear whenever the rain is about. I love the fact that this is an Aussie made product, that is good quality and made for Aussie conditions. I will buying my sons their first driza-bone coats for Christmas!

  10. Only regret is not purchasing the hood
    100%
The first time I got to try my Driza-Bone riding coat was on a day that the skies opened with hail, thunder, lightning and a pouring rain so dense it was as if the air was painted by gray-white icy cold rainstrokes. I've hardly ever seen anything like it. The horse and I were caught by the thunderstorm which lasted a good hour. When we finally got back to the farm, I was dry - at least my upper body was. My knees and thighs were soaked, but I cannot tell whether it was due to the coat or to the fact that I chose to jump off of her as the lightning stroke a bit too close. I had rolled up my sleaves, and I learnt that they need to be rolled inwards, not outwards. In the storm, the lining got wet, and the water crept upwards in the lining. My fault, not the coat's! As for size, I was very uncertain. I am quite big, but I only measure 1,60 m. I used the measuring chart to find my size, and I ended up with an XL. I think I could have done with an L, but XL is not a problem. I need to roll up my sleeves, and I can fit a wollen sweater underneath. Living in Norway, that's a must. I feared it was too long when I first tried it on, but with boots or jodpurs, the length is good. My feet are completely covered in the coat-tails when mounted. The coat creates a dry "tent" which ic very comfortable. My only regret is that I didn't purchase the hood as well. Even though I use a riding hat, water ran down my neck. Then again, the conditions were pretty extreme. In "normal" rain, the riding hat is enough.
