In 1898 a British Sailor Emilius Le Roy envisioned an all-weather, indestructible jacket made of old recycled ship sails that were treated with oil. His first iteration that was dubbed the first ‘Driza-Bone’ unfortunately was pretty flammable due to the use of linseed oil.

Later, T.E Pearson who was the son of E.J Pearson and the founder of Pearson Soap brought a consignment of LeRoy coats to Australia to rework the proofing process. It is this excellent formula that we still use to proof our coats today.

Since 1898, Driza-Bone has become an Australian Icon being worn not only by stockmen but by politicians such as John Howard and George W Bush; Rockstars and models like Kate Moss and by the everyday Australian.

Whether it’s wearing one to drove a mob of sheep across the central plains or throwing one on to keep dry at the footy, there’s nothing more quintessentially Australian than wearing a Driza-Bone.

Our traditional Oilskin coats and jackets are made from sturdy 100% cotton that is coated with our uniquely formulated oil and wax finish to give the Oilskin its distinctive weatherproof and breathable character. As a specialised garment, the Driza-Bone Oilskin fabric needs special attention to maintain its weatherproofing qualities.

You can learn how to look after your Driza-Bone on our Garment Care page.

  2. The Riding Coat is a must
    100%
If you want to stay dry in Wellington (NZ) with it's extremely windy wet winters (and most summers), adding this riding coat to your wardrobe is a must. On average I have a 10-15 minute walk either to transport or clients and with the optional Hood, I arrive anywhere as dry as the name suggests. The leg straps do an excellent job of keeping your lower legs covered and dry.

  3. Needs longer sleeves
    100%
Hi coat great but; 1. still referred to as XXS. It is an XL . 2. I am thinking of getting your heavier coat which is advertised as having longer sleeves. This black coats sleeves are just about long enough for street walking -but horse riding I would be expecting longer sleeves. So ,are they ?

Really pleased with my new riding jacket. 100% recommend. So comfortable and is a dream to ride in. Clothes under neath all stayed dry even though several hours of steady rain while my horse's. Materials are very good quality. Will be purchasing another one when the time comes. Very Happy

  5. Love it.
    100%
I was in Australia in October, 2014 and wanted to purchase a Driza-Bone coat then but my luggage weight wouldn't allow it. So, when I got home, I researched it online and purchased my coat directly from the manufacturer. Very happy with it! Although I'm not a rider (not enough time to devote to the horses I wish I could have), I've worn this coat a few times already in cold, windy and wet weather. It was great! When coming in out of snow/freezing rain, I just shook it and it looked as if it was already dry. Love it!

  6. Driza-Bone it's the best
    100%
DRIZABONE Riding Coat's are the only coat to buy & 100% excellent quality excellent coats & keep you dry & warm. There's other brands & they're cheaper & look similar to Driza-Bone coats & in my opinion are a waste of time & money. If u want the best buy DRIZA-BONE IT'S THE BEST.

  7. Driza-Bone is the standard
    100%
There's a reason why Driza-Bone is the standard. I've owned one other riding coat, and it served me for years. I expect nothing less from this one

  8. Fabric not as heavy as my old one
    100%
I recently bought a riding coat. It looks good as they always have. But it feels like a cheap knockoff the fabric is not as heavy as my original one. It feels lighter & thinner. I just hope it works as well. My other one was stolen. I need a good rain coat is why I'm keeping it

  9. Wool liner didn't fit
    60%
The last fitting holes on the inside of the coat, for the wool interlining, do not line up with the fitting buttons on the wool interlining.
